A Visit to Shades of Grace

On Sunday, February 22, 42 youth and chaperones traveled to Kingsport to visit Shades of Grace United Methodist Church. Shades of Grace is only 7 months old, and is a church whose primary mission is to reach out to the poor and homeless of Kingsport. We left PVUMC at 1:30 with a bus full of teenagers and several SUV's full of chili, cornbread and winter clothes. We had the privilege of feeding "all who were hungry" that afternoon. Thanks to very generous contributions of chili and cornbread from our parents, we had enough chili to feed everyone at Shades of Grace, and we took 4 crock pots to the Salvation Army just around the corner! After the meal, we worshipped with the congregation of Shades of Grace and took Holy Communion with them. After the service, more chili was served before we loaded up the bus and headed back to Abingdon.

In Matthew 25, Christ tells us what true and acceptable service looks like. In his own words, when we do it "for the least of these my brothers," we're in fact doing it for Christ himself. We saw Christ at Shades of Grace - in the homeless men and women who shuffled into the building, bundled up in coats and coveralls, hungry for food and hungry for human compassion. Some would talk with us, others would not. Some stayed inside for the worship service, others went back outside to smoke or talk or just hang around. It didn't matter; Christ showed up and ate chili, and we were privileged enough to see it.

Thanks go to everyone who helped make this project successful. Thanks to the clergy and volunteers at Shades of Grace for your hard work and vision. Thanks to those who donated clothes, those who made chili or cornbread, those who went with us - thank you. I feel certain we will go back. There's just something about having a meal with Christ that is hard to resist.
